Breathtaking, panoramic mountain views defined the site planning and layout of this 4,000-square-foot home. The design resulted in a long and thin rectangular volume housing a three-bedroom house, shop space, and covered breezeway between the two.
The house has a monolithic and uninterrupted roof made of polished, stainless steel standing seam. The single pitch allows for more privacy facing the street, with larger expanses of glass facing the mountain views. The roof is a two-layer and structurally two-way, wood-framed form, which houses over three-feet of insulation. The entire house is designed to meet passive house standards: it is highly insulated, features Energy Recovery Ventilators, and is fully electric. The house is conditioned by heat pumps as well as radiant heating in the slab. In accordance with natural energy exchanges, the home’s southern overhang is designed to restrict direct sunlight into the structure in the summer, and allow sunlight into the structure in the winter. The design of the home guarantees, however, that the astounding views prevail throughout the seasons.
